It's important to plan ahead for maternity coverage because conception must occur at least 6 months after the optional maternity coverage effective date. A pregnancy that occurs within six months of adding the optional maternity coverage will not be covered, even if you qualify for credit toward your base policy's waiting period. If you are a HIPAA eligible individual as defined on the application, and conception has occurred prior to the effective date of the maternity coverage, this six-month waiting period is waived. If conception occurs on or after the effective date, the pregnancy will not be covered. Call (888)490-8782 for more details. Maternity coverage cannot be added to a policy insuring one male without a female spouse or female domestic partner on the policy. It cannot be added for applicants under age 18, unless they are female emancipated minors.
